The last weekend was one of the most exciting in a long time. Many things happened, I got very little sleep and even though I could go back to bed for another 40 minutes I feel it safer to write it down now – the rest of the day is packed with work, just like tomorrow, and before I find the time for an entry I will have forgotten half of all the things that happened.
As I wrote last week we went to my parents on Wednesday, staying the night so that Francesco would be relaxed and in no hurry before going to the interview. We had a very nice evening out with my parents and went to bed around eleven. After breakfast the next morning we decided to take a walk, since it was a wonderful day and Solingen is a very nice place for taking a walk. We stopped shortly at the Old People’s Home where my grandmother lives and about 200 metres away from there we found a little cat in the bushes, totally alone, without mother or siblings, shivering, crying, dirty, …. . After a short staring duel it was decided that we couldn’t leave it there. If there had been other cats we would have presumed that the mother just had gone hunting and would be back soon, but it was all alone and obviously hadn’t eaten anything in quite a while. We tried to take her to a little zoo nearby but they refused to take her. “Not our responsibility, take her to the animal shelter.” First of all I wanted to spare the little thing the animal shelter, second the animal shelter is closed on Thursdays, third there was no time for the drive because Francesco had to leave soon. So the only option was taking it home and trying to find a new home for her ourselves.
To cut a long story short – after a few hours we had found someone and it nearly broke my parents’ hearts when they had to give the little thing away again. (They already have three cats, so no way of taking another one, especially not one so young.)
While we were trying to find a home for the cat, Francesco was on his way to Dortmund for his job interview. It was looooong, more than two hours, and he was a little confused when he got out. He is the only one of the candidates with the right professional background. He has worked in that field for more than two years, knows the business, knows the people. They, however, would like someone older, someone with more experience in leading people. I think it will be a lot easier for Francesco to learn to lead a team than for the other two guys to acquire the huge amount of technical knowledge needed for the job. Unfortunately I am not the one to decide anything, so we’ll just have to wait until next week for the answer.
On Friday morning I had a long and enjoyable breakfast with my mother, including a long talk about relationships, illusions and expectations. Sometime around 1 I headed towards the station to make my way to Mülheim – FunACon-time! Of course all kinds of things went wrong, like me missing the bus and consequently having to walk the two kilometres from the city centre, and when I finally got there I was a little shocked to see that we were only 20 people. Normally we’re something like 70! But the shock soon dissolved into a very relaxed feeling, because those 20 were exactly the right combination of people, all friends, all there to have fun.
So for three days there were a lot of talks, serious and a lot less serious, games, filk circles of different dimensions, walks and expeditions to the nearest ice-cream parlour. I think I burned by neck a little bit, but that’s a small price to pay for so many fits of laughter, hugs and friendly words. The Con-Blues already hit me Sunday evening in my parents’ living room and will probably haunt me for the rest of the week.
There would be a lot more to write, but I really have to get ready for work now.
A big hug to all of you!
